What's Been Going On?
It’s been a busy time over the last few months, what with working on a bunch of new Call of Cthulhu TTRPG books, attending UK Games Expo, online gaming, and a bit of gardening too.
I’ve been editing a range of new Cthulhu books, getting them to the finish line with final copyediting, and so on. Some titles I can mention include the two core books of the new edition of Cthulhu by Gaslight, as well as a couple of books called The Order of the Stone, and No Time For Fear - can’t say much about these as yet, but they are full of cool scenarios - they are currently in art development, so won’t get getting to layout till later in the year. So expect to hear more about them via Chaosium sometime next year.
Games Expo was fun. Attendance seemed up on previous (COVID) years and somewhat back to normal with a very busy Friday and Saturday. The Chaosium booth was stripped bare of the new Rivers of London TTRPG by Friday lunchtime - thanks to Ben Aaronovitch who was there to chat with people and sign copies of the rulebook. The weather was glorious too. I came away with a couple of new board games - more on those in a bit.
Some pics from Expo:
Gaming-wise, I’ve started playing in a Rivers of London game run by an old friend who happens to have once (long ago) worked as a police officer in the Met. So, he’s got a great handle on not only presenting London as a setting but also on the police procedural stuff too. In the first session, we were sent to look into a strange ritualistic murder, and then another murder! Obviously, we don’t have a clue as to what is going on. Hopefully, things will come clearer as we progress…
One of the new board games I got from Expo was Parks, a very attractive game based on the concept of walks through US national parks. As you journey through the four seasons of a year, you collect tokens (sunlight, water, mountains, and trees - and wildlife) that you can then use to “purchase” visits to national parks, and thereby gain points to win the game. Despite its serene and calm mood, it’s a cunningly strategic game where you are planning moves in advance. While that might sound like a lot of brainwork, it’s great fun and somewhat addictive. I enjoyed playing it so much that I bought the two expansions for the base game. If Wingspan is your thing, then I think Parks may well be worth a look.
I’ve also been up to secret things. More on this at a later date. Maybe sometime next month…
Anyway, till next time. Thanks for subscribing and reading along.
Cheers
Mike
